Historical and Spiritual importance
This temple is built during the reign of the Eastern Chalukya dynasty (9th–10th century), this ancient temple is famous for its amazing architecture. The huge 14-feet high Shivalinga installed here is divided into two storeys — a rare architectural marvel, where every morning the golden rays of the sun fall directly on the Shivalinga, bathing it in divine aura.
This place is also a Shakti Peetha. According to mythological belief, the left cheek of Goddess Sati had fallen here during the Daksh Yagya, due to which this holy place got the title of ‘Dakshin Kashi’.
More than 800 ancient inscriptions have been found in the temple complex, many of which are in the Tamil language. These inscriptions immortalize the historical, religious and cultural glory of this place.
